Compromise—the way forward toward a more perfect union. I do not advocate compromising one’s principles. We should always hold firm to our principles. But most political issues are matters of methods by which we can best achieve our principles. As we begin negotiation with those with whom we disagree, both sides must first accept that the other harbors no evil intent. On the contrary, both sides are advocating for some good result. Then the problem becomes How can we both come nearest to achieving our goal? We may end up with an incomplete solution for both problems but a way forward. I don’t what my representatives to “fight” for our values. I want them to work respectful with the opposition for solutions that honor both sides and provides real enduring solutions. That’s how intelligent gentlemen the gentlewomen do business.
